Home win over Freiburg

VfL Women beat Freiburg 2-1 on the last day of the Bundesliga season.

The men's Bundesliga season finale on Saturday showed that anything is possible on the last day of the campaign, but there were no twists as the FLYERALARM Women's Bundesliga came to an end on Sunday. VfL Wolfsburg Women defeated SC Freiburg 2-1 in front of a crowd of 4,469 fans at the AOK Stadion in a repeat of the DFB Cup final, with Ewa Pajor and Dominique Janssen on target for the She-Wolves.
However, it was not enough for the Green-and-Whites to defend their league title as Bayern Munich beat 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam 11-1 at the same time to be crowned champions. VfL's three defeats in the second half of the season meant they were ultimately unable to reel in the league leaders.

However, Tommy Stroot's side still have the chance to lift more silverware this season when they meet Barcelona in the UEFA Women's Champions League final in Eindhoven on Saturday 3 June (kick-off 16:00 CEST).

Goals

1-0 Pajor (8th minute): Following Svenja Huth's free-kick on the right, Sveindis Jonsdottir lays the ball off for Pajor, who strokes it into the net.

1-1 Steinert (35th minute): Freiburg quickly launch a counter-attack after a mistake in Wolfsburg's build-up. Hasret Kayikci plays the ball through for Judith Steinert, who had escaped the attentions of Lynn Wilms, and fires into the right-hand corner.

2-1 Janssen (44th minute, pen.): Former VfL player Meret Felde fouls Alex Popp in the penalty area. Janssen places the ensuing penalty into the right-hand corner.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “Congratulations to Bayern Munich, who were the more consistent team in this competition. Although we didn’t win the league title, we’ve still had a good season. We won the DFB Cup and still have the chance to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League.”
