Hegering joins She-Wolves from Bayern

Defender signs four-year contract with VfL Wolfsburg.

After the signings of Jule Brand and Merle Frohms, VfL Women’s management have pulled off another major acquisition, with Marina Hegering joining the club as of next season. The 32-year-old German international, who has been with FC Bayern Munich since 2020, has signed a contract tying her to VfL Wolfsburg through to 30 June 2026. For the first two years, the defender will bring her almost 15 years of Women’s Bundesliga experience to bear as a player for the She-Wolves, before taking up a coaching position with the six-time German champions.

Bundesliga and international experience

Hegering made her debut in the German top flight as a 17-year-old for FCR 2001 Duisburg, for whom she played until 2011. That was followed by spells at Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2011 – 2017) and SGS Essen (2017 – 2020) before she moved to Munich. She also made her way up through the various age groups at international level before making her full debut for Germany in 2019.

“Great opportunity”

“I’m really looking forward to taking the next step of my career next summer with VfL Wolfsburg and being able to continue playing European football at the highest level,” said Hegering. “I’m particularly looking forward to the great opportunity of working as a coach with VfL Wolfsburg once I hang up my boots. It’s not an automatic step for retiring players and is testament to how much faith the VfL management have in me.”

“Valuable addition”

“Marina has continued to develop throughout her long career and has never stopped improving,” said Ralf Kellermann, sporting director for VfL Women. “That is why we are delighted to have secured a commitment from her to VfL Wolfsburg that will go beyond her playing days. Her skills as an all-round defender, and the great experience she has acquired since she began in Duisburg right through to international level, make her a valuable addition to our future squad.”
