Hard earned victory in Sinsheim

The VfL women have increased their lead at the top of the table with a 1-0 win over TSG Hoffenheim.

Christine Minde and Alexandra Popp celebrate the win against Hoffenheim.

The Bundesliga women from VfL Wolfsburg have solidified their top-spot position in their core business. To begin the second half of the season, head-coach Stephan Lerch’s side travelled to TSG Hoffenheim on Sunday afternoon and earned a 1-0 (1-0) win. Pernille Harder was on target with what proved to be the golden-goal in front of a crowd of 800 in the Dietmar-Hopp-Stadion (15’). In the table, the Lady-Wolves thus increased their cushion at the top to three points. The immediate chaser is now FC Bayern Munich (2-1 win at SGS Essen), with SC Freiburg having slipped to a 1-2 defeat at MSV Duisburg. The title-race continues for last season’s double-winner this coming Saturday, February 24th (14:00 CET), when they play host to SC Sand at the AOK Stadion.

"Wasted chances"

Stephan Lerch: We were prepared for a tough game and that’s exactly what we got! Hoffenheim defended well and left us very little room to operate in. We were never able to put together the type of passing game we are used to and we thus failed to create clear chances on goal. We took the lead thanks to a set-piece, which is important when nothing is coming together from open play. Towards the end, things then became tense for us, because Hoffenheim showed some exceptional moral and we wasted our chances to score a second goal. On the whole, we are happy with the three points, but we know we must make some improvements.
