Hanging up her boots

Tabea Sellner will call time on her career at the end of the season.

After four years in Wolfsburg and 12 with TSG Hoffenheim, She-Wolves forward Tabea Sellner is set to embark on a new chapter after confirming she will retire from professional football when her contract with VfL Women expires this summer.

“Now feels like the right time”

“Right now, I’m just grateful for everything I’ve experienced,” said 28-year-old Germany international Sellner, who was full of praise for her team-mates as well as the club’s staff and fans. “I’ve made some incredible memories, met lots of great people and had a wonderful time, but now feels like the right time for me to end my career and start a new chapter. I’d like to thank everyone for their incredible support. I’m looking forward to giving my all one last time in the final few weeks and, above all, enjoying myself.”

“Utmost respect for her decision”

Ralf Kellermann, director of women’s football at VfL Wolfsburg, added: “Aside from the fact she is leaving VfL, I think it’s sad that Tabea has decided to end her career so early. At the same time, I have the utmost respect for her decision to start a new chapter in the summer. Tabea can look back on her career with pride. During her time here at VfL, she has played a very important role in our triumphs and titles. After taking a break from sport [between 2023 and 2024], she also worked her way back to the highest level remarkably quickly. We wish her and her family all the best for the future.”

Four titles with VfL

Sellner started her career in Hoffenheim’s youth system in 2008 – when she was still known as Tabea Waßmuth. After representing the club’s under-17 team and second string, the forward made her Women’s Bundesliga debut against Bayern Munich in February 2015. She made 108 appearances for Hoffenheim’s senior side in all competitions before moving to Wolfsburg in summer 2021.

Sellner hit the ground running in her debut season with the Green-and-Whites, scoring 24 goals in 37 competitive encounters. She has played 68 games for the club overall, winning three DFB Cups and one league title in that time. The 28-year-old has also won 25 caps for the German national team, with whom she finished runners-up at the 2022 European Championship. She missed the 2023/24 season after giving birth to a baby boy in April 2024 but made her comeback in the She-Wolves’ 5-0 win over Fiorentina in September last year.
