First Team

Final say: Leipzig

The facts from the home match against RB Leipzig.

Although the Wolves managed to turn a 3-0 deficit into a 3-2 thanks to goals from Kilian Fischer (58’) and Andreas Skov Olsen (75’), they couldn’t prevent a fourth successive Bundesliga defeat. While RB Leipzig have climbed up to fourth place with the away victory at the Volkswagen Arena, the Green-and-Whites remain 12th in the table.

More facts and figures

  • Baku back: Ex-Wolf Ridle Baku returned to his old stomping ground for the first time on Friday evening. The right winger set up both the first and third goal for Leipzig, registering his first two assists for RB. That’s already as many as he provided for VfL this season before his move in January.
  • First goals: For Fischer, not only was it his first goal in the Bundesliga but also his first of any kind for the Green-and-Whites in his 48th appearance. Winter arrival Skov Olsen opened his account in a VfL shirt, too.
  • Man of the Match: It’s therefore not surprising that Fischer was recognised for his performance, receiving 40 percent of the votes to be named ‘Man of the Match’. Youngsters David Odogu (25%) and Bence Dardai (7%) followed in second and third place.
  • Bottom of form table: Wolfsburg and Holstein Kiel are the only two teams who have not managed to win any of their last five matches. While Kiel have earned two draws in this time, VfL are bottom of the form table with one point.
  • 29th year in the Bundesliga: There was one positive from Matchday 29: the Wolves can mathematically no longer be relegated and are guaranteed to play Bundesliga football again in the 2025/26 season. It will be the club’s 29th consecutive year in Germany’s top tier.
