Everything still to play for

VfL Women draw 2-2 with Arsenal Women in the UWCL semi-final first leg.

Die Spielerinnen Pajor und Jonsdottir des VfL Wolfsburg bejubeln ihren Treffer im UWCL Spiel gegen Arsenal.

VfL Wolfsburg Women went all out for the win, but despite leading 2-0, they had to be content with a 2-2 draw in their UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal Women. Ewa Pajor and Sveindis Jonsdottir gave the 2013 and 2014 winners a two-goal lead, to the delight of the majority of the 22,617 fans in the Volkswagen Arena, but Rafaelle (45’) and Stina Blackstenius (69’) helped the visitors fight back and take away a well-earned draw.

The tie will be decided on Monday 1 May (kick-off: 18.45 CEST) at the Emirates Stadium in London, with some 50,000 fans expected for the crucial second leg.

Goals

1-0 Pajor (19th minute): A long ball from Lynn Wilms finds Jonsdottir, who chests it down and feeds Pajor, who has already outpaced the defence. The striker needs no second bidding, sliding home a right-foot shot into the far corner.

2-0 Jonsdottir (24th minute): A huge mistake from the visitors, who make a real mess of playing the ball out from their own six-yard box! Rafaelle looks to pass back to Jen Beattie but ends up rolling it into the path of Jonsdottir, who merely has to fire it home into the empty net.

2-1 Rafaelle (45th minute): A Steph Catley corner is converted by Rafaelle, who outjumps Lena Oberdorf and heads home.

2-2 Blackstenius (69th minute): Arsenal get an equaliser, and it comes against the run of play. Victoria Pelova is fed down the right by Lotte Wubben-Moy and fires it into the box, where Blackstenius is on hand to convert from close range.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: "It was the kind of contest we were expecting, evenly-matched, with it all coming down to the little details and where we were pushed to the limit. When you go 2-0 up, you obviously want to take that lead into the second leg. We’ll analyse the match in depth and be well prepared for when we pick it up again at 2-2 on 1 May in London. The aim is obviously to make it through to the final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League."
