The final two matchdays of European Women’s Championship qualifying are complete. A total of 11 She-Wolves have qualified for next summer’s tournament in Switzerland with their respective nations, including Germany, Netherlands and Iceland, while Hungarian duo Diana Nemeth and Luca Papp as well as Norway’s Justine Kielland must now go through the play-offs to earn their place.
Germany with statement win over Austria
Having suffered a 3-0 defeat against Iceland on Matchday 5 of qualifying, Germany, who already had their EURO ticket in the bag, triumphed 4-0 against Austria on Tuesday. VfL quartet Kathrin Hendrich, Sarai Linder, Janina Minge and goalscorer Jule Brand were all included in the starting line-up, while Vivien Endemann came off the bench as she did against Iceland. Horst Hrubesch’s team finished top of Group A4 with 15 points.
Jonsdottir advances with Iceland
Iceland and She-Wolf Sveindis Jonsdottir celebrated two wins out of two, with the 3-0 success at home to Germany followed by a 1-0 victory in Poland. Jonsdottir played a crucial role in both, setting up the first two goals and scoring the third against Germany before netting the winner against Poland.
Two draws for Netherlands
Netherlands have also reached the EURO finals after finishing second in group A1 with nine points. Green-and-Whites pair Lineth Beerensteyn and Lynn Wilms featured in both the 0-0 stalemate against Italy and the 1-1 draw against Norway.
Hungary and Norway in play-offs
Both Hungary, with Papp and Nemeth from VfL, and Kielland’s Norway finished third in their respective groups and must therefore contest the play-offs to qualify for EURO 2025. The Hungarians registered a 5-0 win over Azerbaijan and a 4-1 defeat by Turkey in their final two group games, while the Norwegians drew 1-1 against both Finland and Netherlands.
The draw for the play-offs will take place on Friday 19 July at 13:00 CEST. There will be two play-off rounds of two legs, with the first round scheduled between 23 and 29 October and the second between 27 November and 3 December. A total of 28 teams will be battling it out for seven places in the tournament.
