Double delight

Marcel Tisserand and Renato Steffen both had reasons to celebrate over the weekend.

Three of VfL Wolfsburg’s internationals were involved in qualifying matches over the past weekend, while two others watched from the bench.

Tisserand books ticket to Egypt

Wolves defender Marcel Tisserand went the distance in DR Congo’s 1-0 win over Liberia, which secured their place in this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.

Steffen celebrates comeback

There was also delight for VfL attacker Renato Steffen, who made his first appearance for Switzerland in over two years and his sixth overall. The 27-year-old replaced Schalke 04’s Breel Embolo in the 84th minute of the Nati’s UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying Group D match against Georgia, helping his side see out a 2-0 win. His Wolves team-mate Admir Mehmedi was forced to pull out due to illness but should be fit for their next qualifier against Denmark on Tuesday.

Shock defeat for Brekalo’s Croatia

The third Wolves player to feature at the weekend was Josip Brekalo, who came on for the final 23 minutes of Croatia’s Group E clash with Hungary but could not prevent his side slipping to a surprising 2-1 defeat.

Meanwhile, Green-Whites duo Koen Casteels and Yunus Malli were both unused substitutes for their national teams. The VfL goalkeeper watched Belgium claim a routine 2-0 win in Cyprus in Group I, while Malli’s Turkey beat Albania 2-0 in Group H.
