Defeat in Munich

The Wolves were beaten 2-0 by record Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

VfL Wolfsburg lost their final away game of the season on Sunday evening, going down 2-0 at Bayern Munich. After efforts from Lovro Zvonarek (4’) and Leon Goretzka (13’) in the opening quarter of an hour, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side were unable to find a route back into the game in front of 75,000 spectators at a sold-out Allianz Arena.

The Wolves, who remain 12th in the Bundesliga table, welcome 1. FSV Mainz 05 to the Volkswagen Arena in their final match of the campaign on Saturday 18 May, kicking off at 15:30 CEST.

Goals

  • 1-0 Zvonarek (4’): The record Bundesliga champions take the lead before VfL can settle. Zvonarek collects Alphonso Davies’ pass on the corner of the penalty area and fires a low shot into the net via the inside of the post.

  • 2-0 Goretzka (13’): A Wolves attack breaks down and quick as a flash, Bayern are two goals to the good. Thomas Müller gets on the end of a cross from the left and tees up Goretzka, who sends an unstoppable effort into the right corner of the net.

Reaction

Ralph Hasenhüttl: “It was a very commanding performance from Bayern. If we’d continued to play the way we did in the first 20 minutes, it could have ended very badly. Thankfully we managed to find our feet after that, partly due to a minor change in system – we tried to defend deeper after our high line hadn’t worked. We were given a little breather after their disallowed third goal and, in terms of goalscoring opportunities, we were a match for opponents who had shifted down a gear. Ultimately, however, we were never in with a shout of winning the game. In that regard, It was clear today what we're still lacking.”

Thomas Tuchel: “We played a very fluid game in the early stages, we passed the ball quickly, we played with great flexibility and almost led 3-0. After that, it became more difficult for us to create chances. We couldn’t find any more solutions in the second half, but we didn’t give anything away either. We stayed focused right to the end. Overall, we were very good for 25 minutes and OK after that. On the whole, we deserved to win.”
