Clash between direct rivals

All you need to know about VfL’s trip to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Borussia Mönchengladbach take on VfL Wolfsburg at 15:30 CET on Saturday, in a game between two sides who have failed to fulfil their potential this season owing to a lack of stability and consistency. The Wolves, who recorded back-to-back wins against Greuther Fürth and Eintracht Frankfurt prior to last Saturday’s defeat to Hoffenheim, are determined to make up those three dropped points against a Gladbach side looking to make amends for last weekend’s 6-0 loss at Borussia Dortmund. The Foals came out on top in their last meeting with VfL, however, winning 3-1 at the Volkswagen Arena earlier this season.

More facts and figures

High-scoring fixture: Games between Wolfsburg and Gladbach often feature plenty of goals – as was the case in the teams’ last meeting, when Borussia emerged 3-1 winners. The sides drew 1-1 in their last encounter in Mönchengladbach but the most frequent scoreline in meetings between the Wolves and the Foals is 2-1, with seven games ending that way.

Promising record: The Wolves have recorded more Bundesliga wins (22) and points (74) against Gladbach than against any other side in the top flight.

Little to celebrate in 2022: Borussia made the perfect start to the new year with a 2-1 win at FC Bayern Munich, but they followed that up with back-to-back defeats against Bayer Leverkusen and Union Berlin. They only managed a 1-1 draw against Arminia Bielefeld before claiming a morale-boosting 3-2 victory over Augsburg a fortnight ago. Gladbach were also knocked out of the DFB Cup following a comprehensive 3-0 defeat to second-division Hannover 96.

Kruse at the double: Max Kruse, who netted 23 goals in 66 Bundesliga appearances for the Foals between 2013 and 2015, returns to Borussia-Park for the second time this season. He scored twice in Union’s 2-1 win at Gladbach five weeks ago before rejoining VfL shortly afterwards.
