Best young player

She-Wolf Lena Oberdorf has been awarded the Fritz Walter Gold Medal.

In what is a great honour for the versatile defender, VfL Wolfsburg’s Lena Oberdorf has been awarded this year’s Fritz Walter Gold Medal. The North Rhine-Westphalia-born 18-year-old had already picked up bronze in 2018 and silver in 2019, and this year she has won the top award for German youth players, named after the 1954 World Cup winner. Oberdorf joined VfL Wolfsburg from SGS Essen at the beginning of the current season.

“Motivates me to keep on improving”

“Winning the Fritz Walter Gold Medal is a great honour for me,” said Oberdorf. “It also motivates me to keep on improving and to give it everything I’ve got. I really hope that this award also motivates other players to get the best out of themselves and to believe in themselves.”

“We would sincerely like to congratulate Lena on this award – we’re delighted for her,” added Ralf Kellermann, VfL Women’s sporting director. “Our congratulations also go to the youth clubs and the coaches who have accompanied her along the way and helped her to develop. They have all contributed to turning Lena into one of the foremost German and indeed global talents in women’s football today.”
