Beaten by clinical Freiburg

The Wolves fell to a 2-0 defeat.

VfL lost 2-0 at home to SC Freiburg on Saturday afternoon, extending their winless run in all competitions to eight matches. Despite having the better opportunities, Mark van Bommel’s side failed to find the net and were punished by the visitors, who scored through Philipp Lienhart (27’) and Lucas Höler (68’).

The Green-and-Whites are in Bundesliga action again next Saturday, 30 October (kick-off 15:30 CEST) with a trip to Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Goals

0-1 Lienhart (27’): Freiburg take the lead out of the blue. Following a sharply struck corner, Lienhart pokes the ball in from close range. There’s a hint of offside and referee Tobias Welz agrees, but the decision is overturned by VAR and the goal counts.

0-2 Höler (68’): A clinical counter-attack from the visitors as Christian Günter’s low cross from the left is finished off by Höler with the inside of his boot. The ball goes in off the inside of the right post.

Reaction

Mark van Bommel: “We’re stuck in a situation where we get one chance against us and it’s a goal, but we’re not scoring ourselves. That’s the most difficult thing to get out of. We’ll get there but it takes time. I experienced it myself as a player sometimes, when things don’t go as they should. Then you have to work hard – which we’re doing – and you’ll get out of it. At the moment we’re just lacking that little bit of luck that we need. If we look at ourselves, we have to ask why we conceded another goal from a set piece. That can’t happen.”

Christian Streich: “That was a difficult game. Wolfsburg played in a 4-3-3 and we were expecting a 4-2-3-1. We had the momentum on our side today, which is why we won. That’s not to say it was an undeserved win. We played against a strong Wolfsburg side today, who made it extremely hard for us – and we got the bit of luck we needed to win here.”
