Things have quietened down around the Volkswagen Arena since Sunday, with the long-awaited summer break beginning on Saturday evening for the Wolves. The Green-and-Whites will report back to Wolfsburg on 22 July for two obligatory coronavirus tests, before beginning training sessions on the pitch on the weekend of 25/26 July.
Staying local for pre-season
Straight after Saturday’s final Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich, the coaching team, players and staff gathered again for a group meal at the VfL-Center before heading off for their well-deserved break – the players of course equipped with personal training plans. The majority of VfL’s pre-season preparations will take place in Wolfsburg this year. Friendlies are planned, with the opponents and exact dates yet to be confirmed.
Before then, the focus for Oliver Glasner and his side will be on the outstanding UEFA Europa League Round of 16 second leg against Shakhtar Donetsk, which will be played on 5 or 6 August in either Ukraine or at a neutral ground. UEFA will announce the exact date, kick-off time and venue in mid-July. The remainder of the Wolves’ pre-season plans depends on their progress in this season’s Europa League campaign as well as the as yet unconfirmed start dates for the DFB Cup and the new Bundesliga season. One thing that is sure is that VfL will enter the second round of qualifying for the 2020/21 Europa League competition on 17 September, having finished seventh in the league.
