First Team

A defensive bulwark

All you need to know ahead of the Wolves’ home match against SC Freiburg

There is plenty to play for when the Wolves host SC Freiburg at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday 23 October (kick-off 15:30 CEST). VfL are hoping to get back on track after a seven-game winless run in all competitions, while in-form Freiburg sit comfortably in fourth place and are looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign. Christian Streich’s side also boast the best defensive record in the division, having conceded just six goals so far.

More facts and figures

  • Level pegging: There is nothing to choose between the two teams in the head-to-head stakes, with both sides winning 12 of their 34 league meetings to date. VfL have a slightly better record on home soil, winning 40 per cent and losing just 30 per cent of their Bundesliga home games against Freiburg.
  • Goal number 100 up for grabs: Ninety-nine goals have been scored in league matches between VfL and Freiburg to date. Wout Weghorst has netted more goals against SC than any other current Wolves player, but the Dutchman is currently sidelined with coronavirus. Freiburg striker Nils Petersen has scored three goals against VfL in his career.
  • Mr Consistency: VfL youth product Maximilian Arnold is not only set to become VfL’s record Bundesliga appearance holder (260) against Christian Streich’s side, he is also set to play his 17th game against Freiburg this weekend.
  • Denied by the woodwork: The Wolves have already struck the post or crossbar on five occasions this season, more than any other team in the league. Dodi Lukebakio was the last VfL player to be thwarted by the woodwork against Union Berlin last weekend. Freiburg have been denied by the frame of the goal on two occasions.
  • Freiburg’s attacking threat: Freiburg’s strikers have registered 46 attempts so far this term, which puts them third in the league in that particular category (1. FC Köln are top with 55). VfL’s forwards, however, have mustered just 26 efforts (14th in the division).
