Women cruise into quarters

VfL Women defeat Werder Bremen 5-0 in the DFB Cup.

Die Spielerinnen des VfL Wolfsburg liegen sich nach einem Tor jubelnd im Arm.

The She-Wolves put in a very strong performance against Werder Bremen to book their spot in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup, inflicting a 5-0 thrashing on their Bundesliga counterparts on Friday evening.

Despite the chilly temperatures and persistent drizzle, VfL Women got off to a hot start at the AOK Stadion, with Alexandra Popp giving them the lead after just four minutes. The VfL captain went on to double her own and the team’s tally (26’), while Ewa Pajor (35’), Vivien Endemann (64’) and Jule Brand (84’) also found the back of the net in the 5-0 win.

After three home matches in a row, VfL Women now have an international break. Most notably, there will be UEFA Women’s Nations League action on 1 and 5 December for Matchdays 5 and 6. These will ultimately decide which teams go through to the Nations League Finals, with spots at the 2024 Olympic Games the rewards for the winners.

VfL Women’s next match in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga is set for Saturday 9 December, with a 14:00 CET kick-off away to 1. FC Köln. The next round of the DFB Cup, however, is still a while away, with the German Football Association having inked in the weekend of 5–7 March for the quarter-finals. The draw is also yet to be made, since the round of 16 matches between Kickers Offenbach and FC Bayern Munich, and Eintracht Frankfurt and SC Freiburg, will not be played until the end of January.

Tommy Stroot: “We started off on the front foot right from the kick-off and got our rewards for that early on with a 1-0 lead, which did us a lot of good. Both I and the rest of the coaching staff have a lot of positives that we can take from the match, and we’re obviously delighted to have made it through to the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup.”
