Northern clash ends in draw

The Wolves drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen in their first stalemate of the campaign.

Zweikampf von VfL-Wolfsburg-Spieler Kevin Paredes im Spiel gegen Werder Bremen.

VfL Wolfsburg played out their first stalemate of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season on Matchday 10 as Werder Bremen held Niko Kovac’s side to a 2-2 draw. Vaclav Cerny (37’) and Kevin Paredes (59’) made the scoresheet in front of 28,917 spectators at a sold-out Volkswagen Arena, with Marvin Ducksch (7’) and Rafael Borre (65’) on target for the visitors. The Green-and-Whites stay in ninth place in the standings.

Goals

  • 0-1 Ducksch (7’): An avoidable goal to concede. Despite having plenty of bodies back, VfL give away a free-kick in a dangerous position. Ducksch sends an unstoppable shot over the wall and beyond Pavao Pervan into the net, with a little help from the inside of the post.

  • 1-1 Cerny (37’): A wonderful move leads to a deserved Wolves equaliser. Joakim Maehle runs onto a Mattias Svanberg pass, gets to the byline and pulls the ball back for Cerny, who steers it through the legs of a Werder defender and the goalkeeper for his second goal in as many games.

  • 2-1 Paredes (59’): Just as Werder are starting to apply pressure, another magnificent VfL move completes the turnaround. Jonas Wind feeds Maehle, whose cross into the six-yard box is flicked on into Paredes’ path by Lovro Majer. The American is left with a simple finish.

  • 2-2 Borre (65’): Simple but effective. Borre rises highest to meet Mitchell Weiser’s precise cross from the right and restores parity with an unstoppable header.

Reaction

Niko Kovac: “Neither team deserved more than a point today. We reacted well to Bremen’s fine opener from the free-kick and ended up taking the lead ourselves. We didn’t really deserve to, but we still should have held on to our advantage. Unfortunately we were unable to do so. We’re making too many easy mistakes at the moment, which is making it difficult to win games. We need to improve that.”

Ole Werner: “We’re satisfied with the draw, which I think we deserved. We weren’t efficient enough on the counter-attack to get more from the game. We were defensively sound again, on the whole. Even though both their goals came too easily we didn’t give much away, considering we were away from home. We’ll take the point, which is a useful one for us. We’re heading in the right direction overall. It’s nice that it was reflected in the result today.”
