Lead squandered

The Wolves slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Augsburg.

VfL Wolfsburg lost 3-2 at FC Augsburg on Saturday afternoon, suffering their fourth consecutive away defeat. FCA went in front through Phillip Tietz in the 17th minute, but the Wolves came back into the game and equalised in the 35th minute courtesy of Jonas Wind’s eighth goal of the season. And things got even better on the stroke of half-time, Lovro Majer converting a penalty to make it 2-1.

In the second half, fortune went against VfL, and substitute Sebastiaan Bornauw in particular. The defender’s own goal levelled the score after 79 minutes, before Augsburg substitute Arne Engels completed the turnaround for the hosts just two minutes later.

Goals

  • 1-0 Phillip Tietz (17’): Jeffrey Gouweleeuw is allowed to cross from the right into the middle, where Tietz bundles the ball in from five metres. VfL goalkeeper Pavao Pervan has no chance.

  • 1-1 Jonas Wind (35’): There’s a scramble inside the Augsburg penalty area – then Wind gets to the ball and calmly slots in the equaliser.

  • 1-2 Lovro Majer (45’): Following a foul on Mattias Svanberg, Majer makes no mistake from the penalty spot to put the Wolves in front.

  • 2-2 Sebastiaan Bornauw (79’): Oh no! An own goal from Bornauw and it’s 2-2.

  • 3-2 Arne Engels (81’): From Iago’s deep cross from the left flank, Engels rises highest at the far post to nod in the winner for FCA.

Reaction

Niko Kovac: “We saw a very intense game of football today. My team did a pretty decent job in the first half and led, as we have in many of our away games. Unfortunately, we gave away this lead again after the break. Augsburg then played very enthusiastic, physical and simple football. We didn't manage to keep our composure and inevitably conceded three goals from crosses. I’m disappointed about the manner of our performance in the second half.”

Jess Thorup: “We’ve come back in two games and won. For me, what the team showed on the pitch was excellent. Wolfsburg were very strong opponents, as the first half showed. We had a few problems there but in the second half, the team believed in themselves and got forward. They ran their hearts out and also got a bit of luck at the end.”
