VfL suffered a setback against high-flying Stuttgart on Matchday 7. After deservedly leading at half-time through Yannick Gerhardt’s first goal of the season, the Green-and-Whites failed to stretch their advantage and were undone by a quickfire hat-trick from Bundesliga top scorer Serhou Guirassy, who increased his goals tally to a remarkable 13.
After the forthcoming international break, the Wolves return to action at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Saturday 21 October (kick-off 15:30 CEST).
Goals
0-1 Gerhardt (34’): Yes! The Wolves lead – and it’s deserved. Pascal Stenzel loses the ball on the halfway line and the visitors pounce quickly. Joakim Maehle’s attempt is blocked by Waldemar Anton but the ball drops to Gerhardt, who drives it into the right corner.
1-1 Guirassy (67’ pen): Cedric Zesiger fouls Guirassy in the box and Stuttgart’s star striker converts the subsequent penalty himself to draw level.
2-1 Guirassy (78’): Ridle Baku loses the ball in a challenge with Chris Führich, who immediately passes to Guirassy. The Guinea international rounds Koen Casteels before slotting in to make it 2-1.
3-1 Guirassy (81’): Guirassy completes his hat-trick to stun the Wolves. This time it’s Vaclav Cerny who loses possession – the ball comes to Guirassy via substitute Silas, and he does the rest.
