VfL Wolfsburg’s struggles away from home continued on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 3-1 by VfL Bochum, their sixth consecutive defeat on the road. Patrick Osterhage opened the scoring for the hosts in the 19th minute. Bernardo made it 2-0 with a header on 39 minutes, before Mattias Svanberg pulled a goal back for the Wolves in first-half stoppage time.
In the second half, the visitors had opportunities to draw level but conceded a third goal late on, Christopher Antwi-Adjei finishing off a counter-attack to wrap up a first home win of the season for Bochum.
The Green-and-Whites don’t have much time to catch their breath as they travel to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the DFB Cup round of 16 on Tuesday 5 December (kick-off 20:45 CET).
GOALS
- 1-0 Patrick Osterhage (19’): It had been coming: Erhan Masovic sends the ball back into the middle at the far post, where Anthony Losilla deflects it onto Osterhage, who gives the hosts the lead with a placed shot from 14 metres.
- 2-0 Bernardo (39’): Kevin Stöger sends a corner from the left to the penalty spot, where Bernardo gets the better of the VfL defence and heads the ball majestically into the net from ten metres.
- 2-1 Mattias Svanberg (45’+1): Somewhat out of the blue, Jonas Wind manages to play the ball in behind while falling. Svanberg is onto it and no one is really watching him, allowing the Swede to run through and slot the ball past Bochum goalkeeper Manuel Riemann.
- 3-1 Christopher Antwi-Adjei (87’): That seals it. After a Wolfsburg free kick, Riemann punts the ball long. Moritz Kwarteng flicks it on into the path of Antwi-Adjei, who keeps his composure one-on-one against Koen Casteels and slots it into the bottom right corner from 12 metres.
