Defeat after lead

Wolves lose 3-1 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Die Spieler des VfL Wolfsburg freuen sich über ihren Treffer gegen Hoffenheim.

VfL Wolfsburg suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon, going down 3-1 at Hoffenheim despite leading 1-0 courtesy of Tiago Tomas after 36 minutes. The Green-and-Whites made the better start and controlled proceedings, but conceded an equaliser in first-half stoppage time to John Anthony Brooks. The hosts improved after the break and turned the game around, Maximilian Beier making it 2-1 on the hour mark before Robert Skov sealed the deal in the 74th minute.
After three matchdays, the first international break of the season will take place before VfL host Union Berlin at the Volkswagen Arena on 16 September (15:30 CEST).

Goals

  • 0-1 Tiago Tomas (36’): A long kick out lands with Jonas Wind, who immediately plays the ball into the path of Tomas. The summer signing has space, stays cool and tucks the ball into the near corner. Wind is yet again involved – this time as a provider – as he continues his impressive start to the campaign.

  • 1-1 John Anthony Brooks (45’+2): VfL are not quite able to protect the lead until half-time, and it’s a former Wolves defender who scores the equaliser. After a pass from Marius Bülter, Brooks is completely free and only has to tap it in.

  • 2-1 Maximilian Beier (60’): Skov, just on as a substitute, delivers a precise cross to the far post, where Beier is in too much space and fires a low shot past the helpless Koen Casteels in the VfL goal.

  • 3-1 Robert Skov (74’): Andrej Kramaric skips past two opponents on the left wing and sends the ball into the middle. Skov fires off a shot from the edge of the area and the ball goes in off the left post. The referee checks for a hand-ball in the build-up but the goal ultimately counts.

The coaches’ reaction

Niko Kovac: “We did really well in the first half, deservedly took the lead and should’ve added to it. The equaliser – two minutes into added time – shouldn’t happen. We just have to be better positioned there. Then it’s 1-1 at half-time. The second half wasn’t good; we didn’t do enough going forward. We had too few real chances and made too many individual mistakes.”

Pellegrino Matarazzo: “We knew we needed a good performance to win this match. We needed time to find our feet and I felt that we learned how to defend better over the course of the match. The players dug in and that shows the spirit in the team. Particularly in the second half, we were very mature in our play and didn’t allow any chances until the last 10 minutes.”
