Away win in Cologne

Wolves win 2-1 at FC Köln thanks to another brace from Jonas Wind.

VfL-Wolfsburg-Spieler freuen sich über Jonas Wind Treffer gegen Köln.

VfL Wolfsburg made it two wins from two at the start of the Bundesliga season, coming from behind to beat 1. FC Köln 2-1. After a goalless first half, it was only after the break that the hosts began to really threaten and they took the lead through VfL loanee Luca Waldschmidt in the 55th minute. The Wolves responded quickly through Jonas Wind, who then made it 2-1 ten minutes later with his fourth goal of the campaign. It’s the Dane’s first brace away from home for VfL.

Goals

1-0 Waldschmidt (55’): The deadlock is broken. Sargis Adamyan gets the ball on the left but is unable to control it properly, letting it run through to Waldschmidt. The VfL loanee curls one into the left corner from 18 metres.

1-1 Wind (62’): Mattias Svanberg superbly tees up Wind in the penalty area. The Denmark international leads the Köln defence a merry dance and slots in from 10 metres, wrongfooting goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe.

1-2 Wind (72’): The winner is initiated by substitute Maximilian Arnold, who plays a great pass to Joakim Maehle. He finds compatriot Wind in the box, and after his first attempt is parried by Schwäbe, the rebound from eight metres finds the net.

The coaches’ reaction

Niko Kovac: “We made a very good start, did really well up to the 25th minute and should have taken the lead. However, FC also had a really good goalkeeper in their team. After that we had a spell which didn’t go as we wanted and ultimately FC were able to apply more pressure. After the opening goal out of the blue in the second half, the team responded really well. They wanted to win the game and fashioned the goals really well. All in all we deserved to win on the basis of the good goalscoring opportunities.”

Steffen Baumgart: “VfL had three opportunities in the first 25 minutes, which we defended well. After that we got a grip on the game, albeit without having any clear-cut chances. In the second half, we go 1-0 up and then VfL have the quality to score two goals from a one-v-one situation and with a rebound. At the end of the day, you have to be at 100 percent and not just 99. Last week little things let us down, and again today we could’ve got more out of it. Nevertheless we have to deal with it and move on.”
