Women

Advantage Bayern in title race

VfL Women trail Bayern Munich by seven points after losing 4-0 to the league leaders on Saturday.

VfL-Wolfsburg-Spielerin Sveindis Jonsdottir läuft mit dem Ball über das Feld.

VfL Wolfsburg Women were beaten 4-0 by Bayern Munich in Saturday’s top-of-the-table encounter at the Volkswagen Arena. Former She-Wolf Pernille Harder (48’), Klara Bühl (57’), Lea Schüller (76’) and Georgia Stanway (87’) were on target for the visitors, who took a huge step towards defending their title thanks to a clinical second-half display.

Tommy Stroot’s side are next in action on Saturday 30 March, when they welcome SGS Essen to the AOK Stadion in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. The last-four tie kicks off at 13:00 CET.

Goals

  • 0-1 Harder (48’): The She-Wolves started the second half on the front foot, but a clinical counterattack gives Bayern the lead. Bühl works the ball to Harder, who sidesteps Kathrin Hendrich on the right corner of the penalty area and drills a left-footed shot into the net. Advantage Bayern.

  • 0-2 Bühl (57’): Out of nothing, Bayern double their advantage. Bühl’s corner evades everyone in the area and ends up sneaking inside the far corner to leave VfL with a mountain to climb.

  • 0-3 Schüller (76’): Unbelievable - everything seems to be going Bayern’s way. Harder’s perfectly weighted pass finds Schüller and the Bayern striker keeps her composure to slot home the visitors’ third.

  • 0-4 Stanway (87’): This is turning into an afternoon to forget! Stanway lets fly from the edge of the box, her shot striking the unfortunate Hendrich before trickling into the net.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “This was a top-class match, an international-standard one. After we went 1-0 down, we took a lot more risks and at the end of the day, we lost the most important match in our bid to win the league.”

Kathi Hendrich: “The opening goal was the turning point in the game. We conceded from our own corner, which shouldn’t happen. The first half was evenly matched. The way they took their chances made the difference today.”
