"Worked hard for this"

The Lady-Wolves want to embellish their exceptional season with a Champions League victory.

The VfL-Ladies.

It could prove the glistening jewel in the crown of an exceptional season for VfL Wolfsburg’s women: On Thursday, May 24th (kick-off 18:00 CEST, live in Germany on Sport1), the Lady-Wolves will do battle for the ultimate European crown in the UEFA Women´s Champions League final. Having already claimed the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga and DFB-Cup crowns, now VfL head coach Stephan Lerch’s side will be in the hunt for their third trophy of the campaign. The route to the treble will be no easy one though, with the Green-Whites facing a top European outfit in regular French champions Olympique Lyon at the Walerij-Lobanowskyj-Stadium in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. And the two sides are indeed familiar with one another: In 2013, the Lady-Wolves were 1-0 winners, in 2016 Lyon beat VfL in a penalty shoot-out. At Wednesday’s pre-match press conference, VfL coach Lerch, team-captain Nilla Fischer and striker Pernille Harder took questions from the media representatives.

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: Both teams have a long road behind them and they have worked hard for the chance to play in this final. I hope, and wish for all the fans, that both sides display everything they are capable of. I think everyone can look forward to this game, as there are two top teams going head-to-head. Both teams will be highly motivated, as there is a very special title at stake. We want to play our part in making it an attractive evening of football. It’s a wonderful feeling to participate in such a final and we are already very proud to have made it there.

Nilla Fischer: Our last final against Lyon was very evenly balanced and both teams had the opportunity to decide the tie in their favour within the regular ninety minutes. Tomorrow, we must look to get our goal and not allow the game to go into extra-time. As always though, it will depend on which team is in better form on the day. It’s a final and anything is possible. Lyon have a strong side and they play attacking football.

Pernille Harder: It’s important that we play our own game, just as we did in the Bundesliga. The Bundesliga is a tough competition and our approach proved successful there. I think that, if we go into this final with the same mentality, then we will be able to play our own game and be successful. Until now, I have tried not to think about the game too much, but that’s over with. The focus is now completely on tomorrow’s match.
