Focus on matchday 34

The Wolves have begun their preparations for the clash with 1. FC Köln.

The preparation for the clash with 1. FC Köln is in full swing.

Just four days to go until the final of the 2017/2018 season. On Saturday, May 12th, in the home game against 1. FC Köln (kick-off 15:30 CEST), the decision will be made as to whether the Wolves face two further relegation play-off games, secure a place in the top-flight for next season or are immediately relegated to the second division. This week in training, the Green-Whites will be working hard to ensure the best possible outcome. On Tuesday, VfL coach Bruno Labbadia gathered his men for a session at the VfL-Center in beautiful sunshine and glorious early-summer temperatures.

Switching the play

19 Wolves participated in the team session on Tuesday. Ignacio Camacho, Riechedly Bazoer and Gian-Luca Itter worked individually, whilst their colleagues started the work-out with some sprints, before splitting into two teams to face each other in a training-match. Here the focus was clearly on quickly switching the play, with a number of goals being scored on the counter-attack. On man partially involved in the team session was Yannick Gerhardt, who was back in the squad last weekend in Leipzig for the first time, following a long, injury-forced lay-off. "It was very special for me to be back in the squad again against Leipzig. That’s something I’d worked hard for. I no longer have any problems with my foot. I am not quite at 100% just yet, but that’s not so important going into the final game. I’m there if the coach needs me. I want to help the team and achieve our ultimate goal," explained the Wolves number 13.

"Just one target"

Ahead of the clash with Köln, the Green-Whites are well aware of the potentially explosive nature of the tie. In a brief discussion with the gathered media representatives, Gerhardt remarked on the plan of action for Saturday’s game: "Going into this game, we must suppress everything that has gone before. We have just one target. We have something to win – we can maintain our status. We must go about the game positively. Regardless of whether directly on Saturday or through the play-offs. Nothing else matters. We are focused solely on Saturday’s game."
