The coaches' reactions to VfL Wolfsburg's 2-1 win against FC Schalke 04.
VfL Wolfsburg's first fixture of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season developed into quite a rollercoaster, with goals, hefty challenges and plenty of late drama. Following the Wolves' 2-1 win against Schalke, VfL head coach Bruno Labbadia expressed his delight that his side had been rewarded for their hard work in pre-season, highlighting how VfL had "got right back onto the front foot" after the Royal Blues' 85th-minute equaliser. For his part, visiting coach Domenico Tedesco praised his charges' efforts at the Volkswagen Arena.
Bruno Labbadia: "It was a very intense game, tactically very impressive from both sides. I'm very pleased for the team today – we've been working really hard over the last few weeks and so positive results like that do the world of good. We didn't just work hard, though; we also really bravely tried to play out from the back. Against such a good side – who are deservedly in the Champions League – you need a little bit of luck. When they made it 1-1 it was obviously a setback, but the team responded in the best possible fashion."
Domenico Tedesco: "We played well in the first 15 minutes and Suat Serdar could have made it 1-0. After that, Wolfsburg dominated the first half. We tried switching to a 4-2-3-1 at the break so that we'd have more bodies up top – both for our pressing game and our general forward play. Then there was the red card and we switched to 5-3-1 without a defensive midfielder. The logical consequence of that was that we had to defend higher up. Strangely, that meant despite being a man down we regained possession a lot and managed to make it 1-1. It's a shame that we then conceded and lost. Even so, we'll take the positives from a very good second half. I have to give a lot of credit to the lads, who really put in a shift today and believed in themselves."
