Wolfsburg confirmed as EURO venue

UEFA has awarded Women’s EURO 2029 to Germany.

There’s great delight in Wolfsburg as Germany has been confirmed as the host country for UEFA Women’s EURO 2029 – and Wolfsburg’s Volkswagen Arena will be one of the eight official venues of the tournament. The announcement was made by UEFA in Nyon, Switzerland on Wednesday.

The German bid saw off competition from Poland and a joint bid by Denmark and Sweden. VfL Wolfsburg and the City of Wolfsburg, together with the German Football Association (DFB), have campaigned strongly for the tournament – and now it’s been confirmed that Wolfsburg will again be the setting for top-class international women’s football. In addition to the sporting significance, the decision is also a powerful statement for Wolfsburg as a modern, sport-loving city with international appeal. The Volkswagen Arena was previously a venue for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, impressing with its successful organisation and enthusiastic crowd.

“First-class facilities”

Dr Tim Schumacher, managing director of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH: “The acceptance of the bid is a great endorsement of women’s football in Germany – and of Wolfsburg as an established venue. We offer excellent, first-class facilities for the players, teams and fans at UEFA Women’s EURO 2029. It makes us proud that the Volkswagen Arena will now be part of a major European tournament, and underlines the prominent role that Wolfsburg is playing nationally and internationally in the development of women’s football. We look forward to providing a modern and professional environment and welcoming Europe here.”

“Motivation for the whole region”

Peter Christiansen, managing director of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH: “This decision also has a great sporting dimension for us. Our players have shaped European women’s football in recent years, and many talented youngsters look towards VfL. Now, hosting a European Championship tournament in our own stadium will provide a further boost in motivation for the whole region. For young players, fans and the Bundesliga, this is a moment that shows that women’s football in Germany belongs on the big stage. We’re proud to offer a central stage for that again.”

“Lasting impetus”

Jens Hofschröer, City Councillor for Digital and Economic Affairs and managing director of Wolfsburg Wirtschaft and Marketing GmbH (WMG): “UEFA Women’s EURO 2029 will provide lasting impetus for strengthening and further developing tourism, gastronomy and business in our city. We at WMG are pleased to contribute our expertise to its successful implementation and to present Wolfsburg on the European stage as a modern, cosmopolitan and sports-loving location.”

Hoping for a summer fairytale

Wolfsburg meets all the requirements for staging the tournament: a modern stadium in the Volkswagen Arena, a sports-savvy population, short distances, a strong community and a wide range of experience in the organisation of international sporting events. The approval marks the start of the concrete planning phase, with the aim of creating a new summer fairytale in 2029.
