“With the decision very happy”

Stina Johannes on pressure situations in football and her first months at VfL.

Since summer 2025, Stina Johannes has been guarding the goal for the VfL Wolfsburg women’s team. The Germany international has so far made 15 competitive appearances in the Google Pixel Frauen-Bundesliga, in addition to one match in the DFB-Pokal and eight appearances in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. In this interview, the 26-year-old talks about her experiences in professional football so far, her personal development and the team’s objectives for this season.

Stina Johannes, you have been in Wolfsburg since summer 2025. What ultimately made you decide to join VfL?

Stina: My main focus was on sporting development. I saw Wolfsburg as the next step because the work here is done at a very professional and high level. I hoped to develop both as a player and as a person – and I’m very happy with that decision.

You were born in Hannover. Did being close to your family also play a role?

Stina: My family still lives in Hannover, but the decision was primarily about sporting reasons. Of course, it’s nice to have my family nearby and I’m happy about that. But what really made the difference for me was clearly the perspective at VfL.

How have you settled in Wolfsburg in your first few months, both on and off the pitch?

Stina: Very well. I quickly found my routines and feel very comfortable both within the team and in the overall environment. The club makes it easy to settle in. I’m also happy with my living situation and have a good environment here locally, which of course made the move easier.

Are there any differences in training or day-to-day work compared to your previous clubs?

Stina: At the end of the day, football is still football, but the content on the pitch makes the difference. The coaching staff works very meticulously, and every session has a clear focus. There is a lot of planning behind it and specific demands are placed on us that help us grow. For me, that attention to detail in training really stands out.

As a goalkeeper, you are often in the spotlight. How do you deal with pressure situations?

Stina: Matches can be very different for a goalkeeper. Sometimes only one shot comes your way, sometimes there are many. For me, it’s important to take each game as it comes, review it afterwards and learn from it. I focus on continuing to develop and enjoy being on the pitch with the team. My aim is to deliver my best possible performance in every game.

You were recently named Player of the Match after the game at Juventus FC. What does such an award mean to you?

Stina: Our most important goal was to reach the Champions League quarter-finals – and we achieved that. Everything else is a nice bonus. It was particularly important for us as a team to keep a clean sheet as well. Of course, I’m happy that I was able to play my part in that.

You are still well placed in all competitions. What are your goals for the rest of the season, and what would you personally still like to achieve?

Stina: In the Bundesliga, we want to defend at least second place to qualify directly for the Champions League. In the quarter-finals against Lyon, we want to deliver a strong performance and reach our maximum – they will be very demanding matches. In the cup, the clear goal is to go as far as possible and ideally win the title. Against Frankfurt, it’s of course also a special game for me personally, which is why I’m really looking forward to it. My personal goals align with those of the club. I want to continue developing, stabilise my performances and, above all, enjoy what I’m able to do every single day.
