A new last line of defence for the Wolves: Timon Wellenreuther (30) joins from Dutch Champions League side Feyenoord Rotterdam and will be VfL’s first-choice goalkeeper. The 1.88-metre shot-stopper returns to German professional football after nine years and has signed a contract with the Green-and-Whites until 30 June 2029.

“By signing Timon, we’ve brought in a goalkeeper who has proven his quality at the highest level of European football over the past few years. He has played in the Champions League and the Europa League, won several titles with Feyenoord and most recently also took on responsibility as captain. That shows he can make an impact on a team not only through his performances, but also through his personality. We’re delighted that we were able to convince Timon to join us on our journey,” said VfL Sporting Director Pirmin Schwegler.
From Schalke to Rotterdam
Wellenreuther was developed in the youth academy at Karlsruher SC before joining Schalke’s U19 side. In 2014, at the age of 18, he was promoted to the Royal Blues’ first-team squad and went on to make eight Bundesliga appearances as well as two in the Champions League. He also spent time on loan at RCD Mallorca, making appearances in Spain’s second division. After leaving Germany in 2017, Wellenreuther played for Willem II Tilburg in the Eredivisie and RSC Anderlecht in the Jupiler Pro League before initially joining Feyenoord Rotterdam on loan for the 2022/23 season. The move was then made permanent.
Across his four seasons at Feyenoord, Wellenreuther made a total of 125 competitive appearances. He featured 12 times in the Europa League and made a further 13 appearances in Europe’s premier club competition. With the Rotterdam club, the goalkeeper won the league title in 2023, followed by the KNVB Cup and the Dutch Super Cup in 2024.

“My conversations with those in charge convinced me and showed me the direction VfL want to take and the role they have in mind for me. Returning to German professional football is a special step for me. I’m someone who enjoys challenges and likes to get stuck in. I want to use my experience, prove myself in training every day and help the team achieve success,” said Timon Wellenreuther.
