After securing a spot in the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals in impressive fashion during the week, VfL Wolfsburg Women face their next challenge on Saturday 14 December when they face SV Werder Bremen away (kick-off 14:00 CET).
The match not only represents VfL’s last league game of 2024 but also marks the start of the second half of the 2024/25 campaign. Having drawn 3-3 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, the Green-and-Whites are more determined than ever to take all three points this time.
At his pre-match press conference, head coach Tommy Stroot spoke about...
…personnel news: “In addition to long-term absentees Kristin Demann and Camilla Küver, Lisa Schmitz will be out until the winter break with her shoulder injury. Luca Papp is also sidelined but everyone else is available.”
…keeping momentum from the win over Roma: “Wins like that always help you to recover more quickly. We know we only have a brief window between that evening game and our match on Saturday at 14:00 CET, but those are the challenges you need to overcome at times like this. And we have a score to settle with Bremen as well. We want to leave the pitch as winners. That’s our aim.”
…the key to beating Bremen: “For us it’s all about not making any little mistakes, recovering as well as we can and recharging our batteries for what will be a tough game. Over the last few years we’ve always had to work hard to pick up points in Bremen, so we know how difficult it will be. We’re also aware that we definitely want to play better than we did in the reverse fixture.”
…the opposition: “They’ve been performing consistently well. They’ve got a great structure in their squad and have some fantastic players in their ranks. They’re increasingly adding more strength in depth to their squad. That perhaps hasn’t always been the case; they would struggle after 70 or 80 minutes. In terms of professionalism and quality, it’s very different there now. We’ll need to be prepared for that. We have to impose ourselves. That will be decisive.
