After starting the new year with back-to-back wins, VfL Wolfsburg begin the second half of the Bundesliga season with a trip to FC Bayern Munich. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side travel to Bavaria brimming with confidence, but the record German champions – under the stewardship of Vincent Kompany – are also in excellent form and head into Saturday’s game top of the Bundesliga table on 42 points. Bayern have firmly held the upper hand in recent meetings with the Green-and-Whites, winning each of the last five – including a 3-2 win in Wolfsburg on Matchday 1 of this season. The Wolves will be doing all they can to end that run this weekend.
Facts and figures on the game
Good start to 2025: For the first time in five seasons, Bayern have won their first two matches of a calendar year (they also went on to win their third match five years ago). The Wolves have won both their games in 2025 so far, but the only time they managed to start a year with three straight victories was in 2008.
Resurgent Wolves: VfL ended the first half of the season on 27 points – ten more than they accumulated in the second half of last term.
Bayern’s attacking prowess: The Bavarians’ tally of 53 goals after 17 matches is the second highest in Bundesliga history. The record title-holders have scored at least three times in each of their last six home games, including five in both their last two.
Wolves also a threat: VfL scored 38 goals in their first 17 matches – more than ever before in the first half of a campaign.
Tall order for VfL: Bayern are unbeaten in 19 league matches against the Wolves, winning 17 and scoring 61 goals (at least twice in every game).
Happy travellers: Wolfsburg have won five of their eight away league matches so far this term – which is already one more win than they managed on the road in the entirety of last season. They have also collected more points on their travels this term (16) than last season (15).
