Victory with Tailwind

Wolfsburg Women win their opening match of the “VisitMalta Women Club Trophy” 2-0.

In the first test match of this year’s winter training camp, VfL Wolfsburg’s women’s team secured a 2-0 (1-0) victory over PSV Eindhoven in milder temperatures but windy conditions. Ella Peddemors scored the deserved 1-0 lead for the Wolves just before halftime (45+1). After the break, it was Kessya Bussy who increased the lead to 2-0 shortly before the hour mark.

Match Summary

The opening phase of the game was characterized by cautious play, with no notable scoring chances in the first minutes. In the 20th minute, Svenja Huth appeared in the box after a successful cross from the left side but placed the ball too centrally for the PSV goalkeeper. Shortly after, Luca Papp tried her luck from distance, but the Belgian keeper parried the shot for a corner (21’). As the game progressed, the Wolves pressed more often near PSV’s goal, but nothing came of it initially. Around the half-hour mark, Eindhoven threatened the VfL goal for the first time: Lore Jacobs received a through ball and shot from inside the box, but Martina Tufekovic cleared it for a corner (34’). Wolfsburg remained offensively active. Lineth Beerensteyn drove forward from midfield toward the PSV goal. Substituted Bussy entered the box, but her shot was blocked at the last second (36’). Through aggressive pressing, the Wolves forced PSV into mistakes, allowing Peddemors to regain the ball in the box and pass to Huth – whose attempt, however, could not be converted (39’). Three minutes later, Beerensteyn had another opportunity, unexpectedly receiving the ball in the Dutch box, but her close-range shot went over the goal (42’). Just before halftime, the deserved 1-0 for the Green-Whites arrived: After a goal kick, Peddemors reacted lightning-fast, took advantage of PSV’s lapse in concentration, and calmly slotted the ball over the line (45+1’).

Despite numerous substitutions at halftime, the Wolves started the second half well and required no long adjustment period. In the 58th minute, Bussy extended the lead to 2-0: She intercepted a short back pass from the Dutch team, ran free toward the PSV goal, and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner despite the goalkeeper’s touch. The rest of the second half remained largely uneventful in terms of scoring chances. Former Wolfsburg player Shanice van de Sanden posed a threat in the 76th minute when she received a through ball and moved unchallenged toward the VfL goal, but Tufekovic made a safe save. Ten minutes from the end, Merle Touw of PSV tried a free kick from the edge of the box, but the ball hit the crossbar (80’). Shortly before the final whistle, Wolfsburg almost scored a third: A high ball slid through the PSV box, Alexandra Popp held the ball and passed it to the onrushing Justine Kielland, whose shot narrowly missed the target (86’).

Stephan Lerch: Of course it’s very positive that we were able to win our first game of the new year. Our main focus was on putting into practice the content we worked on during the first days of the training camp – the result was secondary. We showed some good approaches, even though we didn’t really find our rhythm in the opening minutes. As the game went on, we became more dominant. After such intensive training sessions, it simply takes some time for everything to come together and for you to be fully sharp in a match. Overall, it was a successful start: we kept a clean sheet, even though Eindhoven created several chances in the second half. Despite the many substitutions, all players integrated well into the game. We will now stick to our plan and the prepared topics – especially in defense. The conditions here in Malta are very good, allowing us to continue our optimal preparation for the second half of the season over the coming days.
