VfL Women start pre-season with new impetus

The She-Wolves returned to training at Elsterweg for the first time this summer on Friday.

VfL Wolfsburg Women had their first training session at Elsterweg after the summer break on Friday afternoon, marking the official start of the 2025/26 season for the Green-and-Whites. It was also the first session in charge for new head coach Stephan Lerch and his staff.

“Good tempo and everyone enjoyed it”

The She-Wolves took to the pitch in glorious sunshine for what was a sweat-inducing 75-minute workout that included a number of passing drills.

“There was a good tempo and everyone enjoyed it,” said team captain Alexandra Popp afterwards. Among the 16 players who took part were five summer arrivals – Martina Tufekovic, Christina Schönwetter, Janou Levels, Judit Pujols and Kessya Bussy – while Weronika Arasniewicz and Anny Kerim-Lindland were also involved from the U20 squad. Additionally, another youth player currently on trial participated in the session.

Ten squad members were absent, however, due to the UEFA Women’s European Championship presently taking place in Switzerland. Guro Bergsvand was unable to train because of a foot injury, while Sharn Freier worked individually owing to a knock.

“It was a lot of fun”

“Obviously not everything is perfect in the first training session,” continued Popp. “But I’m very positive after this first outing given the quality and sense of enjoyment I saw out on the pitch today.”

Lerch was also satisfied after the first session since his return to Wolfsburg: “I walked out onto the pitch with a smile on my face – and when I came off it was even bigger. It was a lot of fun and today I realised just how much I’d missed coaching.”

Up next

There are two training sessions on the agenda at Elsterweg on Saturday (at 10:30 and 15:30 CEST), ahead of VfL’s first friendly of the summer on Thursday 17 July at RB Leipzig (kick-off 14:00 CEST). The game will be broadcast live on Wölfe TV.
