VfL Wolfsburg part company with Paul Simonis

U19 head coach Daniel Bauer takes over until further notice.

VfL Wolfsburg have parted company with their head coach Paul Simonis. The 40-year-old was relieved of his duties with immediate effect on Sunday evening. Simonis’ assistants Peter van der Veen, Tristan Berghuis and Martin Darneviel are also leaving the club. U19 head coach Daniel Bauer will take charge of the first team in the interim.

‘We all take responsibility for the current situation’

“The decision to dismiss Paul Simonis was not an easy one for us,” explained managing director for sport Peter Christiansen. “Paul is a meticulous coach, who’s worked passionately and shown great professional knowledge. We really valued his work, his ideas and his dealings with the team – that’s why I’m particularly sorry to take this step. Nevertheless, we have to recognise that in football, it’s results and points that ultimately count, and recent weeks have not gone as we all hoped. “Following in-depth discussions with the supervisory board, we’ve come to the conclusion that a change is now needed to bring stability and success on the pitch. We all take responsibility for the current situation – the sporting management, the coaching staff, the players and the whole club. “We thank Paul and his assistant coaches for the work they’ve done and their commitment, and wish him all the best for the future.”

Julian Klamt and Tobias Holm to assist Bauer

Bauer previously took charge of the team for the final two matchdays of last season. The Green-and-Whites collected four points from two games under the 43-year-old, against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (2-2) and Borussia Mönchengladbach (1-0). As was the case then, U19 assistant Julian Klamt and U17 head coach Tobias Holm will complete the coaching staff, which will still include Pascal Formann (goalkeeping coach), Christian Clarup (head of performance) and Koen Stam (first-team transition coach). “We are glad that Daniel Bauer is taking over in a difficult period,” added Christiansen. “We know how he works and are confident that he, together with the team, can initiate the steps required for positive development.”

The new coaching team will lead training for the first time on Monday at midday, albeit without the 13 players currently on international duty.
