Wolfsburg was one of eight possible host cities put forward by the German Football Association (DFB) on Friday as part of a bid to stage UEFA Women’s EURO 2029. Should Germany be awarded the tournament by UEFA in December, the Volkswagen Arena – the home of VfL Wolfsburg – will be one of eight stadiums to stage matches during the competition.
“It would be another international milestone”
“We’re delighted with the decision,” said VfL managing director Dr. Tim Schumacher. “The city of Wolfsburg and the Volkswagen Arena, with its entire infrastructure, offer top-class conditions for UEFA Women’s EURO 2029 matches. We’ve proven this several times already in the past, having hosted international matches and tournaments at the highest level. We’d like to thank everyone involved, in particular the city of Wolfsburg and the DFB for the very thorough, constructive collaboration up to now. Together, we await UEFA’s decision with excitement.”
UEFA’s Executive Committee will announce the hosts of Women’s EURO 2029 in December. “We’re all keeping our fingers crossed that Germany’s bid is successful,” continued Schumacher. “After hosting games at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, this would be another international milestone for Wolfsburg and the Volkswagen Arena in the success story of women’s football.”
Final documents to be submitted by 27 August
Aside from Wolfsburg, the DFB has named Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hanover, Cologne, Leipzig and Munich as potential host cities. The association now has until 27 August to submit its final documents. Portugal, Poland and Italy have also applied to host the tournament, while Denmark and Sweden have submitted a joint bid.
