U20 Showdown

Wolfsburg U20 Travel to Munich.

VfL Wolfsburg’s U20 women have suffered narrow defeats in the opening matches of the second half of the season in the 2. Women’s Bundesliga. Against third-placed SV Meppen and league leaders SC Sand, the team missed out on points by the finest of margins, losing 3–4 and 1–2 respectively. Now, on Matchday 16, the focus is on turning strong performances into tangible rewards. On Sunday, 8 February (kick-off at 11 a.m.), Wolfsburg will face FC Bayern Munich II away at the Bayern Campus, aiming to collect their first points of the second half of the season.

A Six-Point Match

The importance of the fixture is clear from the league table. Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich II are separated by just two places and two points. The Munich side currently sit 12th with 14 points, while Wolfsburg occupy 10th place. Co-coach Philipp Schumann underlined the significance of the encounter while keeping the long-term perspective in mind.
“The importance of the match is obvious, and of course we want to win. At the same time, it remains important for us to prioritise development and education and to focus on our strengths.”

“We’ve Settled into the League”

In the reverse fixture on Matchday 3, Wolfsburg were beaten 4–2 in a hard-fought contest. Looking back, Schumann sees that match as a turning point in the season.
“The game against Munich was the moment when we felt things were starting to improve,” he said, referring to the opening defeats against Meppen and Sand. “By now, we’ve settled into the league. The task now is to show that we’ve improved and to confirm the positive trend of recent weeks and months. We definitely want to see progress compared to the first meeting.”
