“These are the games you live for”

An interview with Svenja Huth ahead of the UWCL match at Real Madrid.

Svenja Huth and the team are embarking on the final UEFA Women’s Champions League trip of this calendar year – and Spain is the destination. VfL Wolfsburg Women take on Real Madrid tonight (21:00 CET) on Matchday 5. Ahead of the game, the experienced midfielder, who’s been with the She-Wolves since 2019, took time to talk to us about the current season, her role in the team and how she stays in top shape off the pitch.

Svenja Huth, you’ve just come out of an intensive period with a lot of games. How are the team feeling after the international break?

Svenja Huth: “It wasn’t easy for the team to get back into the normal rhythm again after only one training session together. Nevertheless, we returned from the international break with a 3-1 win over Freiburg. Now we face big opponents in Real Madrid. These are precisely the games you live for as a player – we’re looking forward to it.”

You’re currently in third place in the Champions League table. Would you have expected that before the season?

Svenja: “I don’t think many people expected us to be in the top four before the season. We’re very happy with where we are and we want to take the next step against Real Madrid in order to get the best result we can at the end.”

You mainly played in midfield before but now you often play on the wing. Where do you feel most comfortable?

Svenja: “I see myself as a versatile player, so I enjoy having to adapt. To be honest, I like being back in my old, familiar position more often. I like supplying my teammates with crosses. At the same time, you still find me popping up in the middle again during the match. At the end of the day, I just want to have fun on the pitch and perform well.”

What’s your secret to remaining at the top of your game after so many years?

Svenja: “Everyone who knows me knows that a lot of what I do off the pitch is geared towards football. Diet, sleep, regeneration – all of that plays a big part in staying fit. As well as that, my family play a big role off the pitch, always standing behind me and supporting me.”

Your contract expires in the summer. Are you already thinking about what you’ll do after your career?

Svenja: “No, I’m living in the here and now at the moment. It’s important to me that I enjoy myself and feel good – both of those are very much the case at the moment. I don’t look too far ahead. Of course, I’ve undertaken some qualifications alongside football so that I have something to fall back on, but currently I’m not worrying about what will happen after the summer.”
