Thank you for six years

Frank Witter laid the foundations for VfL’s sporting revival back in 2018.

After a little over six years in the role, Frank Witter will step down as chairman of the VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH supervisory board on 31 July. The former financial director of Volkswagen AG took over the reins from Dr. Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz on 16 April 2018.

Europa and Champions League qualification

When the now 65-year-old took charge, VfL Wolfsburg were going through a difficult time on the pitch. After watching the Wolves secure their Bundesliga status via the relegation play-offs for the second season in succession, Witter laid the foundations for VfL’s sporting revival with the appointment of Jörg Schmadtke as the club’s new managing director for sport. Just a year later, in 2018/19, the Green-and-Whites secured UEFA Europa League football courtesy of a sixth-place Bundesliga finish. The Wolves went one better after losing in the Europa League qualifying rounds in 2020/21, booking their place in the group stage of the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League.

Continued professionalisation

A former player with OSV Hannover in Germany’s second tier, Witter’s focus was not merely limited to the men’s first team. The infrastructure of the women’s team and youth academy came on leaps and bounds under his stewardship, and he continued to drive the professionalisation of those areas of the club. Witter’s main priority, though, was the financial consolidation of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH: Overall costs were reduced, while certain structures and processes were optimised.

VfL Wolfsburg Fußball-GmbH would like to thank Frank Witter for the trusting, professional and intensive collaboration over the past few years and wish him all the very best for the future.
