VfL Wolfsburg won their second game in the space of a few days, seeing off 1. FC Union Berlin 4-1 (0-1) in the Stadion An der Alten Försterei to pick up three valuable points. Despite falling behind to an early Antonia Halverkamps strike, the She-Wolves came roaring back through goals from Lena Lattwein, Alexandra Popp, Smilla Vallotto and Ella Peddemors to secure the victory.
The Green-and-Whites will be in action once again this coming Saturday in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga, this time away to Eintracht Frankfurt (kick-off: 14:00 CET in the Volkswagen Arena).
Goals
- 0-1 Halverkamps (22’): Union attacker Halverkamps steps up to take a corner and curls it straight into the back of the net. The She-Wolves find themselves behind mid-way through the first half.
- 1-1 Lattwein (57’): There we go! Svenja Huth crosses from the right and finds Lineth Beerensteyn around 11 metres out. Her shot hits the bar, but Lattwein is on hand to stab the ball over the line.
- 2-1 Popp (72’): The She-Wolves take the lead! Lattwein puts a dangerous ball into the box and finds an unmarked Popp, who fires her team in front.
- 3-1 Vallotto (81’): Vallotto pounces on a poor pass and directs her strike from 13 metres out past the keeper and into the net to make it 3-1.
- 4-1 Peddemors (90+1’): On as a substitute, Peddemors shoots from the edge of the box and finds the right-hand corner. It’s 4-1, and the points are in the bag.
Reaction
Stephan Lerch: “It took us a long while to get into the match, and during that time, we had a bit of bad luck and went 1-0 down. After the break, we got into the game a lot better. Our improvement in performance in the second half is something that we’re obviously very happy with, and at the end of the day, we deserved our win and that will really spur us on.”
