VfL Wolfsburg Women impressively triumphed 5-2 against Manchester United WFC on Matchday 4 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Wednesday night. Former She-Wolf Fridolina Rolfö gave United the lead at the Volkswagen Arena from the first chance in the 14th minute, but Ella Peddemors responded promptly with the leveller three minutes later and then made it 2-1 to VfL in the 37th minute. Lineth Beerensteyn increased it to 3-1 shortly before the break but Melvine Malard pulled one back for the visitors in first-half stoppage time.
After the break, Beerensteyn scored again to make it 4-2 (65’), with substitute Vivien Endemann rounding off the 5-2 victory in stoppage time.
Goals
- 0-1 Rolfö (14’): Annoying! United attack down the left side, Malard crosses into the penalty box and the unmarked Rolfö nods the ball in from close range to give the visitors the lead.
- 1-1 Peddemors (17’): Super goal! VfL come up with a quick response to the opening goal as the ball bounces to Peddemors on the edge of the box, and she’s given time to curl it into the right corner.
- 2-1 Peddemors (37’): Brace! The Dutchwoman drives a low cross-shot into the box from a good 25 metres out, which runs all the way through and surprises United goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel to end up in the left corner.<
- 3-1 Beerensteyn (45’): The forward collects a misplaced pass from Julia Zigiotti Olme, sets off towards the Manchester goal and lets fly with a splendid shot from 18 metres that nestles under the bar.
- 3-2 Malard (45’+2): Malard intercepts a short header back towards goal from the Wolfsburg defence and beats Stina Johannes with a flying volley to make it 3-2.
- 4-2 Beerensteyn (65’): Double Dutch! Sarai Linder plays the ball into the path of Beerensteyn, who drives into the box before burying the ball into the bottom left corner.
- 5-2 Endemann (90’+6): Sealed! Substitute Endemann pounces on a back pass from United, goes round the goalkeeper and slots in VfL’s fifth goal of the night.
