She-Wolves sign Kleinherne

Germany international Sophia Kleinherne has joined VfL Women.

Germany international Sophia Kleinherne has joined VfL Wolfsburg Women from Bundesliga rivals Eintracht Frankfurt. The 25-year-old centre-back has signed a contract until 30 June 2028 and will wear the number four shirt for the She-Wolves.

“Overall package has a lot of potential”

“I can completely identify with the aspirations of VfL Wolfsburg,” said Kleinherne. “I sense that the club wants to play an important role and leave its mark in the Champions League, the league and the DFB Cup. The discussions I had with the management, and most recently with [new head coach] Stephan Lerch, also won me over. I know the overall package here offers a lot of potential for me to develop into an even more complete player. In that respect, I’m ready for the next step and to build on VfL’s success of recent years.”

“All it takes to improve our game at a high level”

Ralf Kellermann, director of women’s football at VfL Wolfsburg, added: “We’re delighted we were able to convince Sophia of our concept and plans for the future. With her experience, her remarkable pace and her ability as a player, she has all it takes to improve our game at a high level.”

34 caps for Germany

Born in Telgte in North Rhine-Westphalia, Kleinherne started her career at FSV Gütersloh before joining 1. FFC Frankfurt in 2017. It was there where she made her breakthrough as a player, making her Women’s Bundesliga debut on 11 February 2018 in a game against SGS Essen. She went on to play 183 times for 1. FFC Frankfurt – and later Eintracht Frankfurt – including 13 appearances in the main phase and qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League.
Having made her way up through the youth ranks at international level, Kleinherne has gone on to play 34 times for Germany since making her senior debut in a friendly against England on 9 November 2019. Her biggest achievement to date is a second-place finish at EURO 2022, while she also won Fritz Walter medals – which are awarded to the best young players in Germany – in bronze and silver in 2017 and 2018 respectively
