VfL Wolfsburg Women will kick off their 2025/26 Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga campaign at a special venue on Sunday, with their Matchday 1 assignment away to promoted side Hamburger SV taking place at the imposing Volksparkstadion (at 16:00 CEST).
In the build-up to the match, for which more than 9,000 tickets have already been sold, VfL head coach Stephan Lerch spoke about…
…team news: “Lena Lattwein has been struggling with back problems since the Supercup and will miss out. Luca Papp, Guro Bergsvand, Sarai Linder and Sophia Kleinherne will also be absent.”
…lessons learned from the Bayern game: “One of the things we took away from it was that we were a bit too passive, especially in the first half, and that we should have been braver going into our pressing a couple of times. But there were also periods of the game that were good, where we had the kind of control we wanted to have. We want those periods to get longer, and we’re working on that.”
…opponents Hamburg: “I’m expecting them to be highly motivated, because for them hosting a Bundesliga game at the Volksparkstadion is really special. They’ll be right in our faces in every tackle, and they’ll want to take away our desire to link up and play our game. We’re also expecting them to defend really passionately. They’ll try to force us into mistakes and then take advantage of those moments on the counter or to keep us on the back foot with set pieces.”
…the atmosphere in his squad: “Looking back on the week we’ve had in training, I have to say there was a lot of energy on display – everyone’s eager to get started. It’s also special for us to kick things off with a game like this; it motivates us. We want to show what we’re capable of, as best we can right now. We’re well aware that they’ll be a tough nut to crack.”
…preparations for the game: “It’s never easy to know where you stand ahead of the first game of a season, even if we have already played in the Supercup. That has perhaps given us a better idea of what we need to focus on. We want to impose our game and take another step forward in our development.”
