She-Wolves end year on high note

VfL began the second half of the season with a 3-1 win over HSV.

VfL Wolfsburg Women cemented second place in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga standings with a 3-1 win over Hamburger SV in their final game before the winter break.

Svea Stoldt put HSV in front early in the second half (51’), but the Green-and-Whites turned the game around in the final 20 minutes or so. Captain Alexandra Popp equalised (69’) and then added a second a short while later (80’), before substitute Kessya Bussy sealed the points in stoppage time to make it 3-1 (90’+3).

Goals

  • 0-1 Stoldt (51’): VfL struggle to properly clear their lines and the ball lands at the feet of Stoldt, who fires it into the top left-hand corner from the edge of the area.

  • 1-1 Popp (69’): Svenja Huth crosses from the right into the Hamburg penalty area. Lena Lattwein flicks it on to the back post, where Popp prods it over the line from close range.

  • 2-1 Popp (80’): Comeback complete! Huth delivers another ball into the box and Popp is once again in the right place at the right time to head the She-Wolves 2-1 up.

  • 3-1 Bussy (90’+3): The decider! Popp wins possession in the HSV half and finds Huth, who plays an extraordinary pass forward for Bussy. The French attacker runs clean through on goal and slots in VfL’s third.
