She-Wolves cruise into quarter-finals

VfL into next round of DFB Cup after 3-1 win against SC Freiburg.

VfL Wolfsburg Women booked their place in the DFB Cup quarter-finals on Saturday thanks to a 3-1 victory over SC Freiburg in the last 16. Lineth Beerensteyn opened the scoring for the Green-and-Whites in the 23rd minute, before a Nia Szenk own goal (49’) and an effort from former Freiburg player Cora Zicai (64’) extended the lead. Sophie Nachtigall netted a consolation for the visitors shortly before the final whistle.

The She-Wolves are next in action on Wednesday 19 November on Matchday 4 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, when they will host Manchester United WFC at the Volkswagen Arena (kick-off 18:45 CET).

Goals

  • 1-0 Beerensteyn (23’): SvenjaHuth gets forward well down the right and plays a pass into Kessya Bussy, who finds the run of Beerensteyn. The attacker keeps her cool and drills a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

  • 2-0 Szenk (o.g. 49’): The Freiburg defender attempts to clear Huth’s cross into the box but inadvertently redirects it into her own net from close range.

  • 3-0 Zicai (64’): AlexPopp sprays a pinpoint diagonal pass out to the left. Zicai, on as a substitute, drives into the box, feints past a Freiburg defender and buries the ball into the right-hand corner from around seven metres out. A brilliant goal!

  • 3-1 Nachtigall (86’): Szenk’s cross into the VfL box finds substitute Nachtigall, who controls the ball superbly and fires into the right-hand corner.

Reaction

Stephan Lerch: “I’m very pleased with how we went into the game. We were very dominant and really sharp in all phases. All in all, it was a really strong first half. And it was a solid performance in the second half too. It feels good to move into the next round of the cup with a well-deserved win.”
