She-Wolves come away empty-handed

VfL Wolfsburg Women go down 3-1 away to OL Lyonnes.

Matchday 3 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League saw VfL Wolfsburg Women beaten 3-1 by OL Lyonnes. Striker Ada Hegerberg (25’, 30’) and Wendie Renard (73’) were on target for the hosts, while Lineth Beerensteyn managed a consolation goal in the 80th minute for the She-Wolves.

VfL Women will be back in action on Saturday 15 November, when they face Bundesliga rivals SC Freiburg in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup in the AOK Stadium (kick-off: 16.30 CET).

Goals

  • 1-0 Hegerberg (25’): The She-Wolves are unable to ride their luck. After Lindsey Heap’s free-kick cannons off the crossbar, Hegerberg is first to react and prods the ball home from close range.
  • 2-0 Hegerberg (30’): Hegerberg is on the spot once more. Selma Bacha sends a free-kick into the Wolfsburg box and the Norwegian rises highest to nod the ball on and into the left-hand side of the net.
  • 3-0 Renard (73’, pen.): The hosts extend their lead again after Lena Lattwein commits a foul in the penalty area. Renard fires home from the spot low into the right-hand corner.
  • 3-1 Beerensteyn (80’): The She-Wolves find the back of the net at last! Janina Minge picks up the ball in midfield and feeds Beerensteyn, who races into the box and marks her 50th Champions League appearance with a goal.

Reaction

Stephan Lerch: “I think you have to be realistic and say that the result was a fair one. You can see the quality that OL Lyonnes have out on the pitch. We found it tough to get a grip on the game. We gave it our all and deserved the goal that we got through Lineth Beerensteyn. We can take positives from the match and learn from it.”
