Before the VfL Wolfsburg U17 women’s team heads into the summer break, one major highlight remains on the agenda this weekend: the Lower Saxony side will travel to Hondarribia in Spain to take on top international youth teams at the Tximist Cup.
About the Tournament
The Tximist Cup has been held annually since 2016 and celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The focus is on the development of women’s football and the promotion of young talent. International top clubs such as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United compete in the U14 and U17 age groups. Participating teams are selected based on their commitment to promoting and developing women’s football. Equality, inclusion and respect are the values that remain at the heart of the tournament throughout. “Events like this are always a highlight for women’s and girls’ football. It’s not something you can take for granted being invited to. We’re delighted to be part of the tournament and want to represent VfL Wolfsburg well both on and off the pitch,” says head coach Markus Herbst.
Tournament Format and Schedule
The U17 competition is divided into two groups of three teams. The group winners qualify directly for the semi-finals, while the second- and third-placed teams first contest a qualification match. Wolfsburg will face Real Madrid and SD Eibar in the group stage on Saturday. Depending on their final group position, they will then either advance straight to the semi-finals that evening or play a qualification match first. The placement matches and the final are scheduled for Sunday. Matches will be played over two halves of 25 minutes. All games will be broadcast live on Tximist Cup TV. In addition, every match can be watched live and on demand via the SportVot Live Sports Streaming Hub platform.
“Excitement Levels Are Huge”
Markus Herbst: “We’re really looking forward to testing ourselves against some of Europe’s top clubs. It’s incredibly interesting to see how other teams work and what values they stand for, and then compare that with ourselves. We’ll face two technically strong teams in the group stage, so we’ll need to match them physically and perform at our very best. The excitement within the squad is huge, and we’re really eager to go and play a strong tournament.”
