VfL Wolfsburg have started their training camp in the Weimarer Land district with the wind in their sails after winning the Volkswagen Cup on Sunday. Paul Simonis’ team travelled directly from Zwickau to Blankenhain, where they will stay until Saturday 26 July as they step up their preparations for the forthcoming campaign.
Good atmosphere, little sunshine
The Wolves arrived at the Spa & Golf Resort Weimarer Land at 19:00 CEST on Sunday evening. “The pitch is really outstanding and easy to access,” said Maximilian Arnold after the team had got their bearings. “I’m looking forward to the next few days because we’ll be able to prepare really well here.”
Having played in warm conditions at the Volkswagen Cup, the Wolves woke to drizzly weather on Monday morning, but it did little to dampen the positive atmosphere in the Green-and-Whites squad. “For a footballer, it’s always nicer when it rains,” continued Arnold. “The way it is at the moment, it’s great for playing football. We’re up for it.”
The hotel even has a players’ lounge where Simonis’ charges can spend their downtime. “It’s important for us to spend as much time together as possible at the training camp in order to lay the foundations for the coming season,” added Arnold.
New signings and youngsters in 30-man squad
Thirty players are involved in the training camp in the Weimarer Land district, including new arrivals Aaron Zehnter, Vinicius Souza and goalkeeper Jakub Zielinski. Tiago Tomas, who didn’t feature at the Volkswagen Cup after taking part at the European Under-21 Championship, met up with his team-mates at the hotel on Sunday evening. Rogerio is still training on his own in Wolfsburg, but academy trio Jan Bürger, Trevor Benedict and Bruno Katz are included after featuring against FSV Zwickau.
