Pirmin Schwegler joins VfL

Former Bundesliga player becomes new sporting director.

Pirmin Schwegler has joined VfL Wolfsburg as sporting director with immediate effect as the club restructures its sporting leadership for the coming years. The 38-year-old former Bundesliga player joins from Eintracht Frankfurt. He has extensive experience from various leadership roles in professional football, as well as a long playing career.

The former midfielder and captain made 262 Bundesliga appearances across more than 13 years in the Bundesliga, while he also earned 14 senior international caps for Switzerland.
Since hanging up his boots, Schwegler has held a number of positions in football, including as chief scout for Bayern Munich, and as head of professional football for both TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and, most recently, Eintracht Frankfurt.

“We share a common understanding”

Managing director for sport Peter Christiansen views Schwegler’s arrival as an important asset for VfL Wolfsburg’s sporting ambitions: “I am very pleased that Pirmin Schwegler is joining us. Our discussions were very positive. We share a common understanding of how we want to play football at VfL Wolfsburg and what it takes to build our club sustainably: stable structures and close coordination with the academy, as well as with all other departments within the club. We would like to thank Eintracht Frankfurt for the constructive talks in the run-up to this move, especially Markus Krösche, who has made it possible for Pirmin to take this step at this time.”

“A great character”

Chairman of the supervisory board Dr. Sebastian Rudolph said: “Pirmin Schwegler is a great character, both in his playing days and now as a manager. He can now bring all his experience from his Bundesliga clubs to bear at VfL Wolfsburg - close to the team on the pitch and the staff behind it. We’re delighted that he’s now a Wolf.”
