On Saturday afternoon, the Lady-Wolves claimed their second title of the current season. In a nail-biting cup final, the Green-Whites came on top, with a 3-2 penalty shoot-out win over FC Bayern Munich. Subsequently, at the post-match press conference, VfL head-coach Stephan Lerch and FCB coach Thomas Wörle spoke of a “determinedly contested” and “evenly-balanced” game.
Stephan Lerch: We didn’t get into the game well. Bayern were extremely present early in the tie and put us under pressure. We then found our way into the match and managed to create some chances on goal. Both teams played really well today. At the beginning of the second-half, we put on a lot of pressure and let very little through on our goal. The game remained completely open and was determinedly contested to the finish. In extra-time, neither side wanted to make any mistakes, as that could have proven decisive. In the end, we were overjoyed to have been able to decide this tie in our favour.
Thomas Wörle: We put on a fantastic fight over the 120 minutes – as both teams did! The chances on goal were fairly evenly-balanced too, with both sides having their chances to score. I think we did well in keeping the Wolfsburg attack in check over the distance and we provided them with very little room to operate in. It was a hard-fought battle which cost a great deal of energy for both teams. On the one hand, we are proud of our performance, but on the other hand, we have no title to show for our efforts. All that’s left to do now is to congratulate Wolfsburg. They are not undeserved winners, as it was a tight game and the minor details made the difference.
