Only in the Bundesliga

The fact file on the Wolves’ home fixture against FC Augsburg.

When the Wolves entertain Augsburg at the Volkswagen Arena this afternoon (kick-off 15:30 CET), they’ll be facing unique opponents. That’s because FCA are the only current Bundesliga club who VfL have yet to meet in any other competition. The record against the Bavarians is mixed, with eight wins, nine draws and nine defeats in the books. More facts and stats ahead of the Matchday 9 clash:

  • It’s almost exactly 13 years since Maximilian Arnold made his Bundesliga debut against Augsburg. If he features today, it will be his 23rd encounter with FCA. He’s only played against Borussia Dortmund (25) and Bayern Munich (24) more often.
  • FCA boss Jess Thorup will encounter two former players in Wolfsburg, namely Jonas Wind (FC Copenhagen) and Joakim Maehle (KRC Genk).

  • Thorup led Copenhagen to the Danish championship in 2022 under the direction of current VfL managing director Peter Christiansen.

  • Augsburg have gone 13 Bundesliga games without keeping a clean sheet.

  • The Wolves are winless in five meetings against Augsburg (D2 L3). Their last victory against the Fuggerstädter dates back three years: in November 2021, VfL won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Lukas Nmecha.

  • Kamil Grabara has already saved 32 shots at his goal in the current Bundesliga campaign – only Mainz’s Robin Zentner has outdone him there (35).
