Numerical advantage not used

VfL Women lost 3-2 to Eintracht Frankfurt at the Volkswagen Arena.

The She-Wolves lost 3-2 to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday in the battle between second and third in the Google Pixel Women’s Bundesliga. Kessya Bussy (7’) and Alex Popp (89’) scored for VfL, with the Frankfurt goals coming from Nicole Anyomi (26’), Laura Freigang (28’) and ex-She-Wolf Rebecka Blomqvist (85’) in between.

Minge misses penalty

After Frankfurt defender Nina Lührßen was shown a red card for deliberate handball, Janine Minge missed the subsequent penalty (40’). With the extra player, the Green-and-Whites pushed for an equaliser in the second half but were constantly thwarted by either Eintracht goalkeeper Lina Altenburg or the woodwork.

Goals

  • 1-0 Bussy (7’): The early lead for VfL! Janou Levels plays a perfect through ball to Bussy in the box. The Frenchwomen has a quick look up before stylishly lifting the ball over the Frankfurt keeper. What a goal, what a start!
  • 1-1 Anyomi (26’): The VfL defence are caught napping from a long free kick into the box from the right side. The onrushing Anyomi escapes the attention of Lena Lattwein and bundles the ball in from five metres. A completely avoidable goal to concede.
  • 1-2 Freigang (28’):  Eintracht turn the game around with a quickfire double! Hayley Raso advances down the right wing and crosses the ball into the centre. Again the She-Wolves don’t react well and allow the ball to somehow slip through to Freigang, who gratefully taps it into the empty net.
  • 1-3 Blomqvist (85’): So frustrating! It looked like the equaliser was coming but instead it’s Blomqvist who settles the contest against her former club. The Swede takes advantage of a misunderstanding between Caitlin Dijkstra and Joelle Wedemeyer and makes it 3-1 to the 10 players of Frankfurt.
  • 2-3 Popp (89’): Late hope for VfL as Popp reduces the deficit, poking in the rebound after Altenburg tips Djikstra’s deflected shot onto the bar.

Stephan Lerch: “In the end, small details decided the match today. We didn’t defend well for the goals we conceded. We didn’t convert the penalty, but given our second-half performance we deserved more. We were also missing a bit of luck today, which might have meant us taking a point.”
